Low Temperature LiPo Battery, Work In -40℃
Ambient temperature is a very important factor to impact lithium battery’s performance, normally, regular battery can discharge around 60% energy in -20°C, and nearly can’t discharge any energy in lower than -20°C environment, that’s why most battery manufacturers show discharging temperature of lithium battery as -20~60 centigrade in battery spec.
Why discharging energy significantly reduce in low temperature?
- Electrolyte conductivity decreases, migration speed of lithium ions slows down, charge transfer rate slows down, and permeability of the separator also decreases
- Impedance of SEI film increases at low temperatures, slowing down the speed of lithium ions passing through the electrode and electrolyte interface.
However, with the development of technology and progress of times, more and more products need to work outdoors in very extreme environment as low as -40 centigrade, definitely regular battery can’t meet clients’ requirement.

Caution
Charging battery under 0 centigrade should be avoided, it may cause lithium plating, which impact battery performance such as unrecoverable capacity reduction of battery or significantly reduce on cycle life.
Temperature protect of PCM can forbid charging under 0 centigrade and protect the battery well.
